There are two main ways to install an inverter in your RV. Our first method of choice was the simplest method. The inverter directly connects to the 30/50 amp shore power connector via an extension cord. PROS: CONS: Manually connect inverter to shore power outlet via an extension cord when you want to use the inverter.
Most RV manufacturers do not include an inverter into the factory electrical system – unless otherwise specified. If you want to boondock (aka dry camp) with your RV away from the power grid and full-hookup campsites while still running some/all of your AC appliances, then you need an inverter as well.
You may have noticed that the 120v wall outlets in your RV only work when plugged into shore power or when using a generator. That probably includes the microwave and TV as well. In most cases, this means your RV may not have an inverter installed, or it has one that powers only specific circuits. To find out more about RV inverters, keep reading.
Connecting the inverter to the RV electrical distribution panel requires that you install a transfer switch. Without this switch, plugging your RV into shore power with your inverter connected will permanently damage the inverter because power will be running backwards into the unit.
